Want to be a PMP? First thing you should do is to treat this as a project. Today is your start date and setup a target date. Many managed to pass the exam within 2 months. Nobody can tell you what your target date, should be- so ponder on this and then analyze your strength and weakness - in studying and in meeting your target.

First of all - make sure that you are eligible and know what to expect, download PMP Handbook from PMI or from this link

If you are eligible, then start analyze yourself. The ancient Greek aphorism "Know Thyself" is needed: think about  your study style, your strength & weakness, your workload and your life & professional objectives. Then sit down and inventorize those in written form (on paper or electronic document)

After this intial period then record down your PM experience and try to roughly estimate the hours and the type of PM works you have done in the past. Then use this form
SampVeriform.xls and fill it in. This will help you in filling the online form at PMI.

  • Register to become a PMI member at:  http://www.pmi.org/
  • .You will get the membership ID along with a CD-ROM of PMBOK
  • As a member you are given access right to the electronic library through which you can access to most of the PMI publications and other reference books you need for PMP Exam (Kim Heldman and V Verma for example)
  • you need Contact hours of 35 hours of  education in line in a topic related to PM (this can be your university course, your company course or PMPrepcast). Check  PMP Exam Myths (you do not need to attend a course supplied by PMI's REP)
  • While submitting the application package for PMP exam - include the documents related to that 35 contact hours

 Read again
PMP Exam Myths      This will tell you that you also need to study not only PMBOK but also other books related to general management and  Professional Responsibility.  Then read carefully this electronic document: PMP Handbook   This will give you some background on what to expect and  the detail of the exam specification

  • The PMP examination application can be done online. Before filling up the application - complete this form SampVeriform.xls
    • Document the 4500 hours of PM experience with project details tasks in six domains
    • Payment details ( credit card information)
    • PMI membership ID
  • You can stop anytime and then continue later, once completed pay wth your credit card
  •  you will receive  eligibility letter. This letter is valid for 12 months to appear for the examination
Once you receive the letter - commit yourself to an exam date/period and contact Prometric. Read carefully  this series of Lessons Learned of successful PMP aspirants:  My Top 3 Lessons Learned

Make sure you also read the following collection of articles: Tips & Tricks

Start Studying: These materials below were mentioned in many LLs as very good source of study:

JIMBOK: Jim Owens' PMP Exam Tips - PMBOK 4th ed

( a rehash of topics in PMBOK, rewritten by Jim Owens so that you can easily digest them. Those who have tried to study PMBOK will agree that PMBOK is definitely a book not written for students/aspirants and likely to induce sleeepiness) - this is being updated to reflect PMBOK 4th edition.

All About Professional Responsibility (this is also written by Eric and is a comprehensive coverage of the topic)

Cornelius's PMPrepcast  (rated by many to be the best valued product for PMP study)

Head First PMP: A Brain-Friendly Guide to Passing the Project Management Professional Exam ($32 in PMHUB Amazon shop). Rated by many as a very good intro to PMBOK and should be read first before attempting to study PMBOK)
