The major differences between the Third Edition and the Fourth Edition are summarized below in PMI’s webpage:
- All process names are now in a verb-noun format
- Efforts were made to distinguish between Enterprise Environmental Factors and Organizational Process Assets.
- A standard approach for discussing requested changes, preventive actions, corrective actions and defect repairs was employed.
- The processes decreased from 44 to 42:
- Two processes were deleted.
- Two processes were added.
- Six processes were reconfigured into 4 processes in the Procurement knowledge area.
- To provide clarity, a distinction was made between the Project Management Plan and project documents used to manage the project.
- The distinction between the information in the Project Charter and the Project Scope Statement was clarified.
- The process flow diagrams at the beginning of chapters 4-12 have been deleted and replaced with data flow diagrams.
- A data flow diagram for each process has been created to show where information comes from as an input and where it goes to as an output.
- A new appendix was added that addresses key interpersonal skills that a project manager utilizes when managing a project.
PMI also notes that a complete list of changes will be found in Appendix A of the new PMBOK Guide-Fourth Edition. For more information on the changes please refer to PMI web site. You can also purchase the new Fourth edition HERE but you have to be a PMI member and login first.
Below are 2 great articles from one of the author of PMBOK, Cynthia Snyder Stackpole MBA, PMP, on the differences of the 2 PMBOKs and a pdf file containing a table of all PMBOK 4th edition ITTO by Knowledge Areas sent to me by a member (PMW) – the location of the file is here
My favorite articles is my friend’s article on PMBOK 4th edition vs 3rd, the great Jim Owens’ blog: May the fourth be with You

It is a good “one page” summary of the changes in the processes, however I would like to suggest to get all the details of the changes, one should refer to PMI PMBOK 4th Edition – Apendex A. It gives us details of the differences in 4th edition from 3rd edition.
Hope it helps…
A very good single page summary to get first look on changes. Thanks

Thank you for your comments and appreciation to PMHUb works
Hello,
I have attended a PMP Workshop and earned 35 pdu’s but it was the PMBOK 3rd edition. Can I take up PMP exam of 4th edition which is mandatory from 1st July 2009 onwards?
Thanks,
Shekar
the 35 hrs is nothing to do with PDU. This 35 is contact hours!
you can take the exam – there is no requirement on contact hours to be based on any PMBOK. Even university courses can be included.
Pls DO NOT post question here, PMHUB Forums is the support forum for PMHUB members
I have given presentation on Diffrences between PMBOK 3rd edition vs PMBOK 4th edition in International Conference – Summer Fiesta – June 2009 @ Tokyo, Japan. Uploading it’s presentation as a new post here on this site for everyone’s benefit. I am sure it would help you.
pls send your article to me pmhub@pmhub.net
We will be glad to publish your artcile if it is suitable for PMHUB members
Hi
I took the preparation exam for certification 3er edition and I would like to get my certification as PMP , but I have to update to the 4r edition.
What can you offer me, do you have a update workshop, how long is going to take, and how much it is the cost.
PMHUB believe that the articles compiled here in PMHUB blog – including this article is more than sufficient to help PMs like you to pass the exam. Beside a summary table, there are more than 10 references and more than 5 PMHUB articles discussing the differences. Take your time to digest it and you will have no problem. The problem in setting up a class is that the number of students requiring this transitional course is not much, hence the course fee will be much higher. By giving sufficient free information, PMHUB has done its best to serve the PM community
What is the difference between PgMP and PMP? It seems as if on is strategic and one is tactical. Comments?
