Below is the highlight of hundreds of Lessons Learned archived in the LL Forum of PMHUB from 2005 – present

“The funny thing is sometimes you can tell some questions are not real ones. These kind of questions mentioned some thing you never heard and they even have grammar errors.”
Jim-BC: Passed PMP on Aug 13 2009

I started preparation about 1 month in advance of the exam. I spent around 1-2 hours a day (with the occasional day off to avoid numbing of the brain :D ). On weekends I sometimes extended this time to 2-4 hours. The three days previous to the exam, I probably spent around 5-6 hours a day.

….. I’ve been monitoring many blogs, sites and forums, but PMHUB is No.1
Before doing the test, I wrote down all the formulas, process chart from the page 70 of the PMBOK guide and other stuff like conflict resolution methods, risk resolution strategies and types of power. After each test I did a lessons learned analysis by reading all questions and their answers even I answered right. By doing this I learned much more things than by just reading or skimming over the books.

Passed PMP on June 22nd, 2009

- Completed Jim Bok ( I used to study Jim Bok after every mock exam I took. I understood and memorized his notes. They are very good)
- RajRani’s notes – Very nicely articulated. Gives complete picture. Great for revision

Passed PMP – June 22 09

It took me about 3h20 to to a first pass through the exam. I spend another 20 minutes reviewing the marked questions. I changed a 2-3 answers. I managed to review about 100 more questions in the other 20 minutes. I found one obvious mistake while doing this. So my advice is to keep reviewing

Passed the PMP exam on June 16, Warsaw, Poland

I passed my CAPM last October (didn’t have enough hours under my belt at that stage to sit PMP). Thankfully, I didn’t have too much trouble recalling my study this time around and the whole process was a lot less stressful. (Jessica Delahunty, Baltimore City Public Schools, Baltimore, USA)

Passed PMP 6/14/2009

After much research on the various ways to gain the necessary 35 contact hours, including the wide variety of classes and on-line options, and I chose PM Prepcast for several reasons. First, after reviewing the PMBOK, I felt confident that learning the processes would come easily to me,…… (Register to PMHUB Forums to get the complete LL)

I took the PMP yesterday and unfortunately failed. I found some of the questions to be tricky.

Failed PMP on 6/6/09

… let me give you a sincere advice, you don’t need to remember all the ITTOs for the exam. Please don’t waste your time cramming each and every ITTO rather spend more time understanding the concepts. When I say concepts, I mean you should know which process leads to which process, what important tools are followed and what are important outputs.

How pmhub.net contributed to my success: Why I chose only pmstudy? Because previous test takers on pmhub.net suggested these are closest to real exam. I got Rajesh Rani notes from pmhub. Some other valuable advice from LLs.

Cleared PMP in a reasonable time

Lastly, make a study plan and execute it. It’s a very reasonable exam. Don’t let the people scare the hell out of you.

I cleared PMP today after around 2 months study (Last 20 days involved
very serious study). The test was tougher than the other practice exams
that I had tried and I actually got a Below Proficiency in Professional
Responsibility!!. The remaining areas went well. Thanks a lot to PMHUB.
I picked up a lot of tricks and tips from the LLs posted here. This
site made a big difference to my Prep.

Cleared PMP in first attempt on 8th June 2009 – Bangalore

“I havent done anything extraordinary to clear this cert. The simple logic would be to take your time in understanding the concepts (refer whatever material you have/find to feel stronger/confident).”

Cracked the PMP mystery on June 2, 2009 in Melbourne

Of all the posts that I read, I’ve only come across one person who actually admitting to failing the first time after writing. How are we to know the taste of success if we don’t know the flavor of failure. This is not to make myself feel better for failing the first time, but I did want to share that I did in fact fail in the 1st attempt.

SK Chung – new PMP from HongKong June 2, 2009
I finish the mock exam suggested here, and feel that all are good. Actually, the real exam is more difficult than those mock exams. Suggest you need to do more practice especial for time control during the exam. Good luck.

Passed PMP exam in single try

You really need to explore the internet, get hold of as much online free questions and keep resolving them. The more you resolve, the more you gain knowledge.

CAPM success story: Test-Taking Schedule & Extensive LLs

Small contribution to the ITTO discussion – Much has been said on this site about the test, so I will not repeat, except to echo that ITTOs are tested extensively. More specifically, they do not give a lot of context clues. What is needed is to know the ITTOs well. That said, there was no way I could memorize them. However, I did become very familiar with them, by …..
Passed PMP, 20th May, Bucharest, Romania

One thing that worked best for me when doing practice questions was to extract the wrong answers on a separate sheet of paper and before checking the detailed results to research the question again (using PMBOK/Rita) and to try to find the right answer myself. This helped me during the exam.

Passed PMP May 17 Portland,Oregon

I used PMHub for the following

Passed PMP 15.05 2009 @ Hyderabad, India

I went to PMHUB forum and read each questions posted. I tried not to leave any question that was unanswered. That is the advantage of forum as the questions remain in the forum for ages but in yahoo groups it is difficult to read all previous questions…..

Passed my PMP exam on 14-May2009 Madison,WI

Jim Owens tips are quite handy for reading a couple of days before the exam. So do the Raja-Rani notes from PMHub.net. PMI’s 200 Qts are good but it is really worth just for CAPM and not for PMP exam. The exam is more situational and never seen the questions even from Rita’s. But able to connect some of them with Lehmann’s and Rita’s sample questions.

Passed May 13th – Fredericton, Canada

About 8 weeks left, started reading Headfirst. Took me about 20 days to complete it. (I’m not a fast reader) Analyzed my weaknesses from the tests at the back of each chapter.

Passed PgMP Exam May 11! (bdkean)

Yes, this exam is subjective, and you have to draw on your experience. There were about 5 direct questions – black or white answers. The other 95%+ was evenly distributed between situational and scenario based questions. I only got one scenario with 2 questions about CPI/SPI – only calculations I made on the whole exam

Passed PMP on 05/09, Dallas TX (Amit4PMP)

Jim Owens tips are good to summarise all important topics in respective knowledge areas and would recommend reading it and reading a couple of days before the exam.

Passed May 8, 2009
The exam itself seemed the same or easier than the practice tests – it’s the anxiety that you need to get a handle on
Passed PMP 6th May 09 Singapore
JIMBOK notes from PMIHUB : excellent notes for final formatting of your brain one day before taking up the tests

Guna’s software (check in pmhub.net/pmdigest Study Notes & Tools: Guna_PMP_All_in_One_Tool.zip) for processes : By far the best to revise ITTO …dont miss on it it pulled me thru 30

Passed PMP on May 4,09… In 3 weeks

It is very important to have a clear understanding of the concepts that PMI is trying us to get acquainted with.

Passed PMP 4/30, San Diego, CA
Read PMBOK until you understand each and every line. Will take multiple attempts.
Passed PMP on 05/05, Mumbai
ITTO : I was clear from day one, I will not go about memorizing the ITTO, instead i made a honest attempt of understanding and then remembering the logically, this helped me great deal.
What I did to pass my PMP
Started reading the PMBOK, but that was a waste of time for me
Passed PMP – April 25th – OH
I am really glad I read the Lessons Learnt in PMHUB, because I saw many posts that strongly recommended reading PMBok Glossary, Delegation by Vijay Verma and PMI code of conduct.I followed this advice and I am glad I did that. If not for PMHUB, i wouldnt have paid much attention to these topics. Passed PMP on April 25, 09 in Las Vegas, NV
I would like to thank pmhub for a great website which helped me throughout my preparation for PMP, especially LL and Q&A
Passed PMP on 23 Apr 2009 HK
Whenever you encounters some terms you don’t understand, do search it on web… Wikipedia is really a good place, and there are tones of useful info on web. If time allowed, don’t just read about that particular term but related things.. Sometimes further reading can help – I had some questions which contains terms that I couldn’t recall I saw them in any study materials I read but I saw them during my web search. Sometimes the way someone else presented is more understandable to you than what your materials told you.
Passed PgMP Exam April 2009 !!! Yes, the exam is extremely subjective. I think I also got about 8 direct questions – black or white answers. The questions were evenly distributed between situational and scenario based questions.
Passed exam on 21st of April 2009 in Edmonton
Another person who took exam failed (we met after the exam). He said he read a popular helping book end to end plus 2000 questions but did not read PMBOK.
Passed PMP on April 21st… OC
JIMBOK really helped me in revision especially Procurement and Quality Chapters
My Lessons Learned – Passed PMP on 20-Apr-09

professional responsibility Q’s can be very tricky

PMHUBadmin note: please read this to make sure you are covered

Passed PMP on first try April 6 – Atlanta area
I did not memorize ITTO’s, but had a good understanding of the flows. I focused on the morning of the exam on the Integration Management areas and also listened to several of the overview episodes of the PM Prepcast. I scored well on P & SR, I also had several delegation questions so you should know those. There were some really wordy questions but a fair number of short ones as well.

Passed PMP on 7th April in Hyderabad, India
PMBOK is demanding book due to it’s language and you may feel that all is going over your head after a time.

One of the most important things while studying instead of just reviewing the right answer, understand why you were wrong. This will greatly help you in your exam.

Eric Nielsen’s videos and Jim Owens’ PMP Exam Tips & Columns are very very useful. you can read Jim Owens’ PMP Exam Tips just before you go for your exam.
Passed PgMP exam 3-March-09… Thank God!!
It is definitively a ‘gruelingly subjective’ exam in which not only you have to know the program PMI terminology/theory but also substantial experience handling programs or large/multiple projects is necessary to pass. This is definitely the “bar exam” for Program Managers.
Passed the PMP exam on Feb-28-09
Eric Nielsen’s Video Lectures at pmhub.net. These helped to quickly get the summary and revise ITTO.
passed the PMP exam today 2/24 passed PMP exam 2/22

Have been a PM/Director for 13 years, never felt a need for a PMP, as I have several other academic/industrial credentials.
Yippee – Passed PMP on 13th feb 2009 in Dallas,Texas !!!
In all, I did around 4000 sample questions which helped me a lot in my timing for reading and understanding the questions.I scored above 70% in all the tests.I visited PMhub.net forum regularly and got to know a lot from the questions posted.
Passed PgMP Exam Friday Feb 6
The exam was brutal in subjectivity. I felt that I understood and recalled the background behind every question and was easily able to rule out 2 of the answers each time but yet still lacked the variables that would have been able to define the difference between the two ‘right’ answers. This is an inherent weakness of the exam in that it seeks to evaluate the PM’s ability to make decisions in the absence of clarity when in fact we should always seek clarity before making such decisions.

Passed Feb 4, 09
Few questions required that I knew the ITTOs, I mean, there is no reason to memorize them. If had I all of ITTOs printed w/me I seriously doubt it would have helped.
Passed PMP on Feb 3rd
no matter how much experience you have as a project manager, you still have to study for this exam.

Passed PMP on 8th January in Munich
I did NOT memorize ITTO’s!!! and I don’t feel it would have helped me.
Passed PMP on 7th Jan 2009 – Chennai, India
So, my view is that, the exam is more of application of gathered knowhow, and so try to keep your own customised notes that helps you in recollecting the difficult areas for you.
Passed PMP 5th Jan 2009!!! (Mumbai)
The sample questions teaches you to how to link the concepts learned in the books. And this is what the exam tests you on.

Please, don’t take it lightly at all else it will be kind of waste of your time and money if you fail.
CAPM Test Observations Dec 22
I’ll be sure to post how useful the certification is to potential employers once I graduate in May. I have not seen many undergraduate CAPMs, so it will be interesting to see how it influences the job search from my perspective.

If I had to do it again, I’d of used only Rita’s book and software and ignored the PMBOK entirely.
Passed PMP on 19th Dec 2008 from Hyderabad, India
DID NOT memorize the ITTO’s ( I though it is not logical to memorize so many ITTO’s just for answering around 10 questions or less , We we prepare well and understand the concepts we can even do the these questions correctly)
Dec 18th – Passed PMP – Toronto, Ontario
The approach was Print process maps , make notes of the whole knowledge area on each process maps which make more sense to me and didn’t really need to memorize all ITTOs

I opted to go with the CAPM and take another year before sitting for the PMP. Two years later, I finally did it.
Passed PMP on 3rd Dec 2008
Understand the concepts well and think logically, there is no need to memorize the formulas and ITTOS (at least for me, but there is no harm in memorizing them)
Passed PMP on 4 DEC : Bangkok Thailand
I would be ~number 96 PMP in Bangkok
A few more Tips and a Thank you to the PgMP’ers that Helped
I think what got me over the hump was the support of several authors of PgMP materials. It is refreshing that the ones that have passed the exam are very anxious and willing to help others. This is a hard exam, but it also seems to be developing into a very tight community of professionals sincerely wanting to help others.
Passed PMP exam on 24th Nov, Bangalore, India
There were questions which were not covered in any of the books I mentioned above but the answers to these were quite evident among the choices provided
Passed PMP exam and Lesson learned
I got a bad news that I had not passed my exam. I could not believe it. In short I forwarded my exam passing report to related authorities and after one month investigation finally they sent me a congratulation email and updated my status in their database. I found that you should keep a record of all the emails which you write or get from PMI customer care for your reference in case you face any problem
Passed PMP today – Nov 18
… Lastly….just try to think what PMI would like you to answer.

PMBOK will be heavy when you read first , But You love it in the second and third pass. I suggest all PMP aspirants to read PMBOK at least twice.

Passed PMP Exam in Fremont, CA on Nov 9th, 2008
Quite a few questions on cost, very few on schedule, a couple on delegation, heavy on quality, quite a few on communication, very few about Risk. The questions are meant to test the understanding of the topics. They are not meant to test how much you can memorize.
Passed PMP on Nov 9th in Dallas, TX: My LL is my LL.
Visit PMHUB often for all the other exam resources. Trust me there is no other place that is so organized like PMHUB. Definitely this discipline is helping everyone to get the exact resources that they want while preparing for the exam. My special thanks to the admin for this.

One more PMP! Passed 3rd November 2008 in Lisbon, Portugal
Well, this is great day and I wish the best luck for those who are going to try this exam. Believe that is worth it, not only for the certification, but for the challenge of studying and learning about real project management practices.

Passed 29 of October!
Writing your LL before you take the test (very motivating)
Party Time ………….
LL – a. Go through all the questions and their answers and try to understand logic from
PMBOK’s view, and try to interpret situational questions from PMBOK’s point.
Passed PMP on 10/22/08 in Michigan
I found the LL section very helpful in terms of setting expectations and keeping motivated. Thanks to PMHub for this resource. At first I was a little put off by the strictness of the Admin, but as I read more, I could see why that was necessary – some people just can’t follow directions!
PMP certified on 17th Oct 2008, Gurgaon
It took me 3 weeks of preparation time excluding the time taking for a week while application was being processed & attending 4 days PMTI Fastrac classroom to earn “35” hours of Contact hours.
PMP certified on 17th Oct 2008, New Delhi
… PMHUB forums is a great place to get all this advice and for free Smile Please do visit this site at least once in a day. You may not post, but reading other people’s post and imagining yourself to be writing a post of success itself is a great driving force (for me at least)

Certified on Oct 13 2008, Chicago, IL

The exam is not too difficult, nor is it just bookish knoweledge. It will test your project handling experience for sure along with good practices described in PMBOK. Overall, the exam was 50% from books/other resources listed here and remaining 50% is what you have done/are doing at work.

Ask your wife/girlfriend/friend to ask you any term from the PMBOK. If you come across terms where you have that ‘deer in the headlight look’, then you need to go back to books again for a review. Passed PMP Septermber 30th, Lagos, Nigeria
Come up with a plan of study. Your best source for that plan is this PMHUB site. Read other Lessons Learned.

Passed in Toronto Sept. 19, 2008 Lessons Learned
After doing both the CAPM and PMP over the last number of months I am naturally quite happy that my study time is complete for the time being.
Passed the CAPM today
Fully read the PMBOK several times. As bad a read as it is.
Passed Sept 17, 2008 Portland, Oregon
Up until now, I only managed small projects, had no formal authority to do anything or spend money, and never followed any real method. I was a network admin, then DBA, and then software consultant. Most of my projects were fairly small, under $50k in size, so my confidence beginning the PMP journey was very low. I passed, and so can you!
Passed 16th of September 2008 – Lisbon – Portugal
I was very happy to have sound isolation stuff to put on my ears. There were some other type of prometric tests running at the same time with very very heavy keyboard pressing involved… (It disturbed me a lot).
Passed PMP 16th Sep Wash DC
The question on PMP exam were little easier then the one on pmcampus and Rita’s book. The earned value questions required little calculations and were very easy and one does not need calculator for those.
Passed PMP- Sep-16th-08-Minnesota
Night before the exam I didnt read anything, slept for 9 good hours.
Passed PMP – Dallas, Tx – Sunday 09/14/2008
… hardly read the PMBOK.
Passed PMP on September 8, 2008 – Toronto You need to be fully aware of your own situation and use the information that is specifically useful to you. For example, many people say that one should try to memorize the ITTO’s and that one should not study on the day of exam. This doesn’t work for me as my memory is not great. Instead of memorizing the ITTO’s, I find it easier just to try to really understand the rationale

failed pmp on 4 th september Even though I failed and nobody likes to fail in any venture or attempt the reality should be accepted. As per PMI I was less proficient in in three areas . So I think I have to improve a lot.

Passed PMP Exam on Sept 03 2008 Not to mention the LL and question bank in this forum. Firstly, the LLs in this forum helped me with “motivation” and “inspiration” and secondly, the LLs helped me evaluate my exam preparation planning, this helped me restructure my planning.

Surfed around PMHub especially the LL. These provided valuable information where I can find the sample quiz, question bank to answer when I don’t understand some decision made in the question, pm knowledge and historical study plan to enhance my study plan.
Passed the PgMP Exam today – 8/28/08
I started studying the material in April 2008, submitted the application at the end of June and cleared the audit on July 14th and scheduled my exam the next day for today. For the last 45 days I’ve devoted a minimum of one hour per weekday and four hours each day on the weekend to the material and practice exams. I was confident that I knew the material I’d studied, but less confident that my study material was appropriate for the exam.
Passed PMP on Aug 27th – 2008
Exam was esay as it was thought to be.
Finally the journey is over Aug 24, 2008
Read the question carefully and all 4 choices. I experienced this problem while doing mock tests. I think during the exam, with conscious effort and specific focus on this, I was able to overcome this.

Many of the questions were practically thesis style, overly wordy, with many detractors, noise, and useless information unneeded for answering the crux of what was being asked. Passed PMP on 30th July in Auckland, New Zealand
On Exam day, I have gone through PMBOK Glossary and Sridhar’s notes. I have decided to brain dump formulas and PMBOK Page 70. Initially little bit nervous but after 10-15 questions I calmed myself and treated the exam as another mock test. Finished the first run in 3 hours and marked around 15 questions. Spent another 20 minutes to review marked questions and then decided to end the exam. I was quite sure to see congratulations screen but that screen took long time to appear.
Passed PMP
I think what makes or breaks is your practice of the questions. I used to read PMHUB PMP EXAM QUESTION BANK almost everyday 1 month before the exam. The discussions help us to develop some mental milestones and makes the retention of concepts easier. I wish I could spend more time on PMHUB question Bank.

Lastly, Remember that this exam is also a mind game in addition to testing your Project Management skills. It is always better that YOU control the exam rather than have the exam controlling you !

Passed PMP on July 14th (Milwaukee)
Focus on understanding concepts & not memorizing the things
Passed July 14th
I find that reading a another book(s) first then reading the pmbok makes the reading a little less painful because things make better sense in your head then reading the pmbok first.
Passed July 11 2008
From the local PMI chapter I took the 35 hour course thinking this would set me on the right path. Wrong! While it did provide good info and practice exams, it missed the mark in the need to read widely and practice test widely.
Passed today (10 July) UK
This is the first time that I sit an exam with 200 multi choice questions over 4 hours and in English (not my mother tongue but my working and PM language!
Passed PMP yesterday (Jul 7th 2008) at San Jose, CA (my LL)
I would like to suggest for PMP aspirants based on my experience, make your own planning strategy and stick to it. Before you make, I certainly advise go through this Forum LL, take the inputs from them, what books you need to study, how much time you need to put, etc., Also suggest, you don’t need to panic, but at the same time this is not an easy exam, and it needs firm commitment and continues study, understand PMI processes well and apply on real time situations, etc., and it really test you.
LL-CAPM Passed on 7th July
I read in one LL that CAPM is not a easy exam. But in my opinion it is very very easy if u have good understanding of the knowledge area and respective processes.
Passed PMP on July 6 in Toronto, Canada
In total I calculated that I have spent between 80-90 hours on this PMP initiative. I am glad that I did it economically (although I might have spent more time than those who attended some kind of boot camps or Prep Courses).
Got it.
After the welcome screen, Tutorial screen came. There I made a big mistake.
Passed PMP 7/1/08 in RI – First Try; 1 Month Preparation
I used some schedule compression techniques (hey, maybe I did learn something) to allow me to complete my test in a shorter period than typical. I read 2+ hours per day, and I dedicated at least 2 full weekends of the month to studying
Passed on the 3rd of July in Romania
If you hear about exotic topics such as bipert float and such don’t worry about it. Even if you get those kind of questions if you can’t answer them it is not likely to affect your performance as they are very very few. So don’t worry about those. Concentrate on PMBOK and your study materials and if you get those right you will be fine. I was Smile
Yippyyyy Passed PMP on 30th June – Santa Clara, USA
From CAPM to PMP – I passed today! (June 27)
In all I must of completed close to 800 practice questions and put close to 100 hrs of study against my preparation. I can safely say that my experience as a CAPM played into my passing score and made studying easier.
Achieved PMP designation Tuesday, June 24th
I was given a locker to put everything I had into (wallet, watch, phone, pens, everything). After signing in I was allowed to start 10 minutes early. During the tutorial I brain dump PMBOK page 70 like I’ve heard in the forum.
Passed PMP today(23th June 2008)
Try to take as much mock exam as possible. This will help you to read the questions faster and answer the actual exam faster. Also this will help you to think from PMI pers

  • Hi,

I passed my PMP exam on Wednesday 05.27. Below are my Lessons Learned and other details.

My core preparations really started the Friday 05.22 with approx 6 – 8 hours each day including 4 hours of dedicated testing time. The core studies were:

    Core Study Plan -
    1. Read PMBOK
    2. Read Rita
    3. Created my hybrid notes from Rita and PMBOK combined; this consisted of a 1 double-sided page per chapter; created them 2 nights before the exam and was the only thing I reviewed the day of the exam
    4. Read PMBOK glossary
    5. Practiced Page 70 of PMBOK extensively and mapped to the Rita Process Game

    Practice Tests -
Took tests everyday for the last 4 days at the same time my test was scheduled. This helped me get into the routine of sitting through the 4 hours on the test day; below are the tests and scores with elapsed time -
    1. PMBOK Questions in 3 hours scoring 157/200 or 78.5%
    2. Rita Questions in 2 hours 19 mins scoring 158/200 or 79%
    3. VLC Questions in 55 mins scoring 89/114 or 78%
    4. Misc. Questions from Crosswind, Testking and other sources approx 150 randomly
    5. Head First Questions in 2 hours 29 mins scoring 149/200 or 74.5%
    6. Oliver Lehman Questions in 1 hour 43 mins scoring 46/75 or 61.3%
    7. Pmstudy.com Questions in 2 hours 46 mins scoring 109/175 – 62.29%

So you see, the Law of Diminishing Returns actually works .. the more number of tests I gave, the slower I got and progressively scored lower :) ; so knew it was time; btw however trivial this Law may appear, don’t ignore this topic for the exam

    PMP Exam -
During the test, I finished the 200 questions in 2 hours and 58 mintues with 1 break of 5 mins after the first two hours. Spent the next 45 mins to review the 34 marked for review qts. with the balance of the time did random sampling of questions to review them .. figured having invested so many days studying, 15 more minutes will not kill me and this did help. While reviewing the marked questions, I covered the original answers with my hand and attempted to take them again, if the answers matched, moved on immediately without giving it a second thought. In cases where I answered differently the second time around, analyzed it further.

My Analysis and Lessons Learned –
    • The very first question was whacked; have not seen in PMBOK or Rita, talk about confidence builder; followed by the next 5 or six which were very tough, wordy and cost calculations related. It did impact me from a confidence point of view and that effect stayed till then next 50 questions or so. I was getting ready not to pass, but then I
changed my strategy and started marking them for review and moving on. Later when the feel-good factor set it, was able to re-visit those questions more rationally

    • The questions were wordy, a good portion of them but not all; comparable to Rita questions in terms of wordiness and length. However I personally found questions from HeadFirst wordier and that was a good test to learn how to read and re-read and grasp the gist of the questions. So highly recommend, try the HeadFirst test to experience
    the ultra long questions

    • Rita book is good, it helps in understanding the concept. However found it to have a tinge of dry humour/sarcasm inbuilt, does not help when you are preparing

    • Also found HeadFirst to be very simple and light (did not read it indepth but only perused it and for the answers to the questions I got wrong during the practice test); was able to capture the fundamentals immediately. HeadFirst is light read and fun to go through; no sarcasm either

    • Several question banks focus a great deal on negative reverse questions such as the one with “Except”, “which does not”; not a single question was presented that way in the exam.

    • Focus on PMBOK; though it is dry and boring, it is very very important to cover the minute details which are easy to get missed in Rita (not sure about the other books)

    • Spend time on learning the details of each concept, ITTO. For eg. Matrix organization, there is so much more than what Rita book has to offer .. was surprised to see a question pertaining to matrix which took me several re-reads to figure it out. You’d think you know everything there is to a Matrix org.

    • Focus on the PMBOK glossary, a good refresher before the exam

    • ITTO – I refused to memorize these. 2 hours prior to the exam, I scratched notes for myself using a few ITTO and that proved very helpful. There were a great deal of questions on ITTO; some asked about the concepts, some phases, 1 or 2 were direct, but overall you
needed to know what they mean rather than just the name of the ITTO. Updates (ITTO), had approx 5 questions which were related to Updates ITTO. In my preps, I would overlook them, till the last day and that helped.

    • For a good quality score, focus on Quality. I was surprised to see the number of the Quality questions on the exam. Though I had expected a good portion of them, they totally outnumbered my expectations

    • Cost Calculations – These were very complex questions and none like any that were part of the practice exams. After spending approx 5 mins on each, I was forced to mark them for review and move on; reattempted them during the review session and was able to think more clearly. Not straight forward at all. These made the fence question in Rita’s book look elementary.

    • You will be risking it if you take Risk Chapter lightly

    • Remember – Customer Focus and Satisfaction is essential to any project, with that mindset, a few questions will be easy to score

    • Focus on a set material and question banks. There are tons of resources available; create your checklist and stick to it. I was tempted and distracted with the wide array of alternate options and made a conscious effort not to indulge in extra materials till I have
finished the ones at hand. Truth is you, if you have a good checklist, you will not have time to complete it all. So don’t waste your time hunting for notes, questions, and books. Create a Checklist and stick to it. Ironically Checklist is a Quality output ;)

What would I do differently -
    • Increased focus on PMBOK
    • Include HeadFirst in my studyplan
    • Relate PMBOK Page 70 and Rita’s Process game and map them up earlier in the process of my studies
    • Invest time in studying in ITTO; not just what they are but with descriptions and how they fit into the process and inter-relate to other areas
    • Questions not sure for, mark for review and move on. Come back later to revisit
    • Give myself a few more days headup time to create my own notes to study from
    • I would not cram in info and study till the very end prior to the exam. Give myself apporx. 3 hours (if not more) prior to the exam to clear the mind. Well that was the plan, but it did not work out that way
    • Scope out the testing center with parking and other locale traffic in advance

I hope this helps atleast a fraction with your preparations.

    All the best.

Now that I have passed the exam, adding those three letters to my signature. :)

    Fai! -PMP

Just passed the PMP, 3rd edition. Some thoughts . . .

I used the PM PreCast (ipod), Andy Crowne’s Book and Rita Mulcahy. Did not really use the PMBOK.

On the PMBOK guide – IMHO, it’s not a great example of effective communication. I read over and over that I should study it several times. I did try multiple times. It’s not so much that it put me to sleep – which it did. I just could not get any value from it. It uses new vocabulary to define the existing concepts. More significantly, it’s definition were overly academic and not as concise as they could be. (It’s quite a statement when people say that they have to read another book on PMBOK to understand what should be simple concepts within PMBOK.) Ultimately, the time investing in any reading of it was an opportunity lost. The only thing that I did use in PMBOK – I read the glossary twice a few days before the exam. (Note – if you enjoy and/or get value from reading PMBOK, please continue to do so, it is the basis for some of the test. For me, I prefer a PMBOK replacement.) I could go on here – I welcome comments.

On Andy Crowne’s book, The PMP Exam. This book is underrated. It explains PMBOK with ease. It faithfully goes through all of the processes. You quickly walk away with a clear understanding of everything. You realize that there is not a single complex item within PMBOK. There’s something to be said for clear communication. It looks like a thick book, but it has big margins, a big font and pictures, so it’s a breeze to go through. You could easily do a chapter a night (2 hours each) and understand PMBOK in 2 weeks. Spend more time, and you can go through the book in a week. Here, like PMBOK, it’s more about the core knowledge rather than the application of the knowledge. So I don’t think that it’s enough to get you though the exam, but it got me out of reading PMBOK.

I then read Rita Mulchahy. Here, she does a lot of application of the knowledge. She also get’s inside your head and trys to challenge you, which I really liked . But, the book is not comprehensive, and I would not use this book alone to get through the PMP. She is, however, quite the self promoter of her other products.

I also had her FastTrack software. It was good. Questions would repeat – so you would know too many after a while. Still there was value there. I scored an 81% on a 200 question PMP test. It also had a Super PMP section. I stopped at 50 questions, scored a 56% a few days before the exam. It estimated that it would take me 6 hours to do the 200 question exam. Yikes! As it turned out, none of the questions on the exam were like the Super PMP, They were closer to the regular PMP fast track exam. I would not even bother with the Super PMP.

Also got a couple of free chapters for Head first and there online 200 question free test. Scored an 80% on the test about half way through my studies. It’s a good test with clear explanations. In reading part of the book, it was super clear – a real easy read. I would consider the book.

Regarding the PM Precast – I have great deal of respect for the creator. Really tried to take you through everything. Went through every ITTO. Unfortunately, it’s not the media for me. I don’t think you can absorb 10 different tools on the way to the train station. He did have some gems on the podcast though. He does an hour long interview with an expert on the critical chain method. Here, one of the most significant advances in the PM in the last three decades is not on the exam and only a few sentences are given to it in PMBOK, but it worth hearing.

A lot of people mention that I should read Vijay Verma’s chapter on delegation. I did. Note that I only had a question or two on delegation. Reading Vijay’s chapter would not have helped. Not sure why people are saying to read this. But it’s a short read, and he’s a good writer. I’m glad I got introduced to it and I hope to read his books in the future. (Maybe he can rewrite PMBOK. )

Some things to think about when coming you with your study plan . . .

    Consider how you learn:

For me – from least to most effective – I learn form the following.

    • Hearing it.
    • Classroom setting.
    • Reading it.
    • Reading and highlighting.
    • Reading and note taking.
    • Teaching it.

So for me – I would have been better off having a small study group. Perhaps teaching a few sections. I should have tried to form one. Hearing podcast was simply ineffective. I stubbornly stuck with a study plan even though it was ineffective.
But think about it, what works best for you? Answering this allows you to make better a better study plan and more effective you of your time.
The easiest way to up your score quickly is to study the 6 page PMI Professional Responsibility document. It’s not difficulty – read it at least 4 times. Know the title of the document.

On time – I’m a slow reader. I finished the first pass with 12 minute left. (Took a 5 minute break at 100th question.) Did not have time to go through all the questions marked for review.
